Big Data, machine learning, and data science are all the rage and seem to be making promises to alleviate the problems of biased and ad hoc decision making. Unfortunately, the statistics regarding the success rate of these initiatives isn't so optimistic. Together decision analysts and data analysts can improve the effectiveness of data analytics investments by following the principles of Decision Quality by clarifying why the data analytics initiatives are important to the business, how much to spend on acquiring data, and by prioritizing our initiatives according to their marginal contribution of value from a portfolio perspective.
