Position Description Summary

The Director, Portfolio Decision Strategy will play a pivotal role in partnering with senior leadership and project teams to embed decision quality process that guide strategic decisions and effective management of portfolio risks, directly influencing how resources and investments are allocated for maximum value creation. This influential position demands an experienced professional with a track record in leveraging decision analysis methodologies and advanced modelling techniques to spearhead strategic initiatives and enhance decision-making processes. The ideal candidate is an experienced decision-framework facilitator and decision-modeler, with a robust understanding of the biopharmaceutical industry, encompassing both commercial and R&D landscapes, and adept at stakeholder engagement to ensure balanced and widely supported decisions.

Main Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Strategic Decision Consultation and Facilitation:

  • Serve as an internal consultant by collaborating with project teams to deliver specialized expertise in decision analysis and modelling.
  • Implement structured decision-making methodologies and advanced modelling techniques to assess possible outcomes, navigate complex choices, and provide data-driven recommendations for team presentations to Governance.
  • Lead project teams through scenario planning, risk assessment, and sensitivity analysis to support comprehensive assessments and informed strategic decisions.
  • Lead and moderate high-impact workshops and collaborative sessions to distil decision objectives, surface creative solutions, and rigorously evaluate trade-offs, driving consensus and clarity in decision pathways.
  • Lead and improve the PTRS (Probability of Technical and Regulatory Success) framework in partnership with Portfolio Development

Governance and Process Enhancement:

  • Promote transparency, inclusiveness, and alignment with organizational objectives in portfolio decision-making processes.
  • Develop and implement standardized processes and tools to ensure consistent application of portfolio decision analysis within the PD&C framework.
  • Continuously evaluate, refine, and enhance the organization's decision-making frameworks by monitoring performance and responding agilely to business needs, offering strategic recommendations for advancement and innovation.

Capability Building and Mentorship:

  • Design and deliver targeted training programs, tailored to build advanced decision analysis capabilities across project teams and stakeholders.
  • Inspire a culture of continuous learning, excellence, and innovation in decision quality throughout the organization.
  • Create case studies and disseminate success stories to highlight the impact and value of decision quality initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in business, economics, engineering, or life sciences. MBA or advanced scientific degree (MS, PhD) strongly preferred, with demonstrated understanding of pharmaceutical R&D processes and business fundamentals.
  • Minimum 12+ years of biopharmaceutical industry experience with exposure to research, development, and/or commercialization processes. Deep understanding of drug development lifecycle, regulatory pathways, and commercial strategies.
  • Direct experience with applied decision analysis methodologies, advanced R&D portfolio management techniques, Monte Carlo simulations, real options analysis, and/or data science applications in pharmaceutical settings.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement, ensuring balanced and widely supported decisions and perspectives.

Primary Function of Position

As a critical member of the Strategic Portfolio Management team, the Staff Strategic Analyst will be responsible for aggregating and evaluating data from a variety of sources to drive product portfolio tradeoffs at the Business Unit and Enterprise level. The Candidate will conduct financial, commercial, risk and resource analyses to create insights that influence product and commercial leadership executives. The Novartis Strategy & Growth team is seeking an Associate Director of Portfolio Analytics who will serve as a strategic partner to senior leadership and R&D teams, delivering real-time portfolio insights and financial analysis to inform decision-making and portfolio prioritization. This role combines traditional portfolio analytics responsibilities with project- and asset-level strategic decision support – acting as a liaison with research and development units, driving rigorous valuation and scenario planning efforts, and providing development area/unit-specific insights to guide our pipeline strategy. You'll be working with cutting-edge analytics tools and methodologies to optimize our R&D investments and maximize value creation.

As Associate Director, Portfolio Analytics, you will be responsible for delivering sophisticated financial modeling, scenario planning, and strategic insights that directly influence executive decision-making. You'll work closely with cross-functional teams across Biomedical Research, Development, Commercial, and Strategy & Growth units to ensure our portfolio investments are optimized for both scientific and commercial success.

Responsibilities
  • Holistic Pipeline Assessment & Portfolio Reviews: Support ongoing portfolio assessment and portfolio prioritization by providing a timely, holistic picture of the pipeline. Monitor and communicate the impact of recent internal and external events and decisions on short-, mid-, and long-term portfolio growth to ensure a comprehensive understanding of pipeline status and strategic positioning within the competitive landscape.
  • Portfolio Reporting & Insights: Create and maintain regular reporting on the pipeline covering dimensions of value, strategic fit, risk assessment, and execution timelines to give stakeholders a clear and data-driven view of pipeline status and progress. Ensure consistency of portfolio information for internal decision-makers and for external reporting requirements including annual reports, regulatory filings, and investor communications.
  • Governance Decision Support: Contribute strategic insights to inform portfolio governance decision-making on complex project trade-offs and investment decisions, including evaluations of internal pipeline projects versus external Business Development & Licensing opportunities. Prepare comprehensive project assessments and portfolio positioning analyses in partnership with Strategy & Growth and other key stakeholders.
  • Advanced Valuation & Scenario Planning: Provide sophisticated valuation expertise by delivering in-depth financial analysis of development programs using DCF models, real options analysis, and Monte Carlo simulations. Manage complex project and asset assessments and support critical resource/funding decisions through detailed decision analytics and comprehensive scenario planning exercises that account for multiple risk factors and market dynamics.
  • Disease Area/Development Unit Strategic Insights: Produce DA/DU-specific portfolio analytics, competitive benchmarks, and strategic recommendations for senior leadership, supporting evidence-based decision-making and effective resource allocation within specific therapeutic areas or development units. Develop deep therapeutic area expertise to enhance strategic recommendations.
  • Cross-Functional Integration & Relationship Management: Act as a strategic integrator and key relationship manager for pipeline analytics across the organization. Serve as a trusted partner to Biomedical Research, Development, Commercial, and Strategy & Growth units by providing actionable strategic and financial insights and acting as the primary liaison for all portfolio analytics matters.
  • Advanced Tools & Capabilities Development: Establish and drive innovative portfolio analytics tools, systems, and methodologies to standardize critical data inputs such as probability of success metrics, competitive intelligence, and valuation parameters for comprehensive portfolio reporting and assessment. Lead the advancement of our capabilities in pipeline modeling, simulation techniques, and predictive analytics.
  • Functional Leadership & Strategic Vision: Contribute significantly to the continued build-out and strategic direction of the Enterprise Portfolio Insights function. Act as an influential ambassador and recognized portfolio analytics expert throughout the broader organization, championing best-in-class practices, advanced methodologies, and fostering a culture of rigorous data-driven decision making across all levels of the organization.
  • External Benchmarking & Competitive Intelligence: Conduct comprehensive competitive landscape analysis and external benchmarking studies to inform portfolio strategy and positioning. Maintain awareness of industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive movements that could impact portfolio decisions and strategic direction.
  • Risk Assessment & Mitigation Planning: Develop and maintain comprehensive risk assessment frameworks for portfolio projects, including technical, regulatory, commercial, and competitive risks. Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in business, economics, engineering, or life sciences. MBA or advanced scientific degree (MS, PhD) strongly preferred, with demonstrated understanding of pharmaceutical R&D processes and business fundamentals.
  • Industry Experience: Minimum 5+ years of significant pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry experience with substantial exposure to research, development, and/or commercialization processes. Deep understanding of drug development lifecycle, regulatory pathways, and commercial strategies.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership Experience: Extensive cross-functional team leadership experience including project management or similar leadership roles in complex drug development environments. Experience in major management consultancy with focus on international, multidisciplinary pharmaceutical projects can be considered equivalent experience.
  • Advanced Analytical Skills: Proven expertise in handling and modeling complex financial and commercial data sets, with comprehensive knowledge of advanced forecasting methodologies, valuation techniques, DCF analysis, and statistical modeling. Compensation & Benefits

Comprehensive Compensation Package:

Base Salary Range: $145,600 - $270,400 USD annually

The final salary offered is determined based on a comprehensive evaluation of factors including relevant skills, experience, education, performance history, and market positioning. Upon joining Novartis, compensation will be reviewed periodically as part of our performance management process, with opportunities for advancement based on individual contributions and business results.
